“I believe art is ahead of our analysis. Through art-making, the act of careful observation, I gain agency over my experience and perception.”

- ALEX H NICHOLS

ABOUT

Each fall, local and international artists are invited by Djerassi Resident Artists Program alum ALEX H NICHOLS to create site-specific installations and performances around a question. Believing that a test site for artists to innovate is vital. Placed in and around the old barn and redwood forests offering visitors a rare opportunity to encounter artistic process and ephemeral works in nature.

NAVIGATION’s mission is to create space for exploration and push the boundaries of thinking and making. Our goal is to incite dialogue and conversation around how we perceive the world. To invite people to examine their own reality.

Our happenings are like interruptions.

The theme comes from something real being navigated. A lived question.

This year’s theme is glitch.

Glitch is a spike or change in voltage in an electrical current when the circuit suddenly has a new load on it. Can the ‘glitch’ represent a spike or slip in identity, perception, or rejection of a system?

This year, artists have been asked to make work that examines a time when they glitched.

Come spend a day in nature observing art installations and performances. You will encounter a photograph laid in a field of grass, listen to the strings of a koto instrument under a pine tree, and see a woman suspended in a pink box.

ALEX H NICHOLS, Djerassi 2021 alum, is a writer, artist, and performer. She honors a space of openness and playfulness. This is her fourth year collaborating with the Djerassi Resident Artists Program to bring the community together around the questions we ask in our lives.
